The new paid parking system for Downtown Redding goes online Tuesday. There will be a two week grace period during which warnings will be issued instead of tickets, but people who work downtown are encouraged to look into the employee parking pass program. The application process will open Thursday. Those applying will need to provide documentation that they work in the downtown area. The $25 per month permits will be linked to their license plate numbers and must be associated with a preferred parking lot, so first-come-first-served preference will be in effect. Only a limited number of permits will be issued. The city has over 2,000 on-street and public off-street parking spaces downtown, in addition to the two private parking structures, with 400 spaces in the California Street structure and 60 underground. The rate will be $1 an hour weekdays for the city spaces. Private parking is up to $8 a day. Of course there’s a lot of free parking for those who don’t mind walking a couple of blocks. More information about pay options, including a mobile app and a pay-by-text system, can be found at cityofredding.org/downtownparking.
