Large Crowd Expected As Gateway School Board Discusses Hiring Of New Superintendent

The Gateway School District Board of Trustees, who fired their Superintendent during the last meeting, is apparently expecting a large crowd for Wednesday’s regular meeting because they’ve moved it from the district office to Central Valley High School. That’s one of the Shasta Lake City area schools in the district, along with four elementary schools and three alternative schools. On December 21st the board fired Superintendent Jim Harrell on a 3 to 2 vote, though the dismissal was loudly opposed by many of the parents and teachers attending the meeting. Harrell still has a year remaining on his contract, which will apparently require a six-figure buyout. Harrell has threatened legal action. The board members have not indicated any consideration of a replacement, with the agenda merely saying they’ll “discuss the next steps”. There had been some rumors circulating that named Bryan Caples, who has a contentious employment history and lost in may by a wide margin as he tried to take the county schools chief position from Judy Flores. Wednesday’s meeting is at 4:30PM following a closed session.
