Megan Rapinoe, a worldwide soccer star who grew up in Palo Cedro and graduated from Foothill High School, has been presented the nation’s highest civilian honor. President Joe Biden honored 17 people with the Presidential Medal of Freedom Thursday. The others included Simone Biles, Denzel Washington, John McCain, Gabrielle Giffords, and Steve Jobs. Rapinoe’s many athletic accomplishments include winning gold in the 2012 Olympics, and the World Cup in 2015 and 2019. She’s now a professional soccer player, and has been an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ rights. On her suit Thursday, Rapinoe wore an embroidered “B.G.” in honor of Brittany Griner, the pro basketball player currently imprisoned in Russia.
