As far as Shasta County is concerned, there’s no such thing as “Safe and Sane Fireworks”. Although they may be purchased legally just across the county line in Cottonwood, fireworks of any kind are illegal even to possess in Shasta County. If fireworks are lit, the penalty is greater, and if fireworks cause damage, there may be criminal charges and the person responsible -or their parents- can be held liable for all costs, both for damages and for fire suppression. Last year Shasta County fire agencies reported 157 pounds of illegal fireworks were seized. There were more than 60 fireworks-related calls for service, and 2 vegetation fires were started, burning a total of 3 acres. There will be some very impressive professional fireworks shows this year, including Anderson Explodes Sunday evening at the Fairgrounds and Redding’s Freedom Festival Monday evening at the Redding Civic Auditorium.
