The Coroners Office has not yet released the name of a man killed in an officer involved shooting off Interstate Five at Lake Shasta. The incident is being investigated by a multi-agency team led by the RPD. Just after 1:30PM Thursday a white 4-door sedan hit the wall that separates the freeway from the O’Brien Rest Area. The car then careened across both lanes, left the pavement and struck a tree, and the car and the surrounding vegetation caught fire. A witness called 9-1-1 and was still on the phone when a CHP Officer arrived less than 3 minutes later. The witness and the officer approached the burning car, with the driver still inside, but then the officer saw that the driver had a gun and he was getting out of the car. The officer and the witness took cover behind the CHP vehicle and the officer repeatedly ordered the man to drop the gun, which he apparently would not do. Investigators say the man forced a violent confrontation that put the officer and witness in danger, so the officer shot him. He died at the scene. The dead man’s name has not been released. Investigators have not said if he fired any shots.
