Update: Papini Takes Plea Deal, Admits Kidnapping Was A Hoax

Sherry Papini has made a plea deal with federal prosecutors, admitting that she planned and participated in her own hoax kidnapping. The 34-year-old mother of two has signed an agreement to plead guilty to a single count of mail fraud and one count of making false statements. She had faced 34 counts of mail fraud. In November of 2016 Papini vanished while jogging near her Mountain Gate home. When she reappeared about 3 weeks later in Yolo County she was bound, beaten and burned. She claimed to have been abducted by two Hispanic women but the FBI says she was actually with an ex-boyfriend in Costa Mesa, an accusation supported by DNA evidence. Papini was arrested March 3rd. Prosecutors have not revealed what sentence they’ll be seeking, so until she appears in court to enter her plea she still faces five years for the false statements and 20 years for the mail fraud.
