Man Arrested On Murder Charges After Shooting Northeast Of Redding

A man arrested Wednesday night following a manhunt northeast of Redding has been charged with murder. At around 7 O’clock, there were multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired, so a Code Red Alert was issued with residents told to shelter in place within a half mile of Fernie Way and Helen Oaks off of Bear Mountain Road. As deputies were responding, neighbors started reporting that a man had been shot, and that the suspect was pacing around and lighting small fires around the property, apparently including pouring gas on the victim’s motorcycle and igniting it. Redding Police were called to assist with their Bearcat armored vehicle and drones, and the CHP helped secure the perimeter. The victim was found lying in the driveway dead with at least one gunshot wound. The homeowner, 58-year-old Steven Ronald Schlapia, was suspected to be the shooter and he was gone. At around 9:15PM Redding Police detained Schlapia about a mile away from the scene on Portero Drive. He’s in jail on a murder charge, with bail set at a Million Dollars. Arraignment is set for Friday afternoon. The victim’s identity has not been released.
