A man arrested Wednesday night following a manhunt northeast of Redding has been charged with murder. A Code Red Alert was issued with residents told to shelter in place within a half mile of Fernie Way and Helen Oaks off of Bear Mountain Road. There were reports that a man had been shot, and that the suspect lit the victim’s motorcycle on fire, and also burned the victim himself. Redding Police were called to assist with their Bearcat armored vehicle and drones. The gunshot victim was transported out by deputies to waiting medical personnel, who had staged on Bear Mountain Road. He apparently died because the suspected shooter, 58-year-old Steven Ronald Schlapia, is in jail on a murder charge, with bail set at a Million Dollars. Schlapia was captured about a mile away the scene on Portero Drive.
