Annual Bull & Gelding Sale Kicks Off Tuesday In Red Bluff

The 81st annual Red Bluff Bull and Gelding Sale gets underway Tuesday at the Tehama District Fairgrounds in Red Bluff. It’s the largest sale of bulls, horses and livestock dogs west of the Rockies, with sales last year totaling around $2.2 Million. Last year some bulls sold for up to $16,000. A gelding went for $47,000. That’s a lot of money for a horse that’s not going to reproduce. The average price for stock dogs was over $8,700 with the priciest being $17,000. In 2018 two dogs went for $30,000 each. Sifting and grading begins Tuesday as judges and veterinarians make sure only top quality animals make it into the sale ring. Prospective buyers are checking the stock and this Friday the big auction takes place, followed by a bull ride and a dance party. Anything with a western theme is being sold at the event, from handmade saddles and jewelry to furniture and livestock trailers. There’s also a western art show and auction.
