The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office wants everyone to know that if they get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Sheriff’s Office demanding the payment of a fine, that caller is lying. The victims in this phone scam are led to believe that they’re subjects of a federal investigation, and that an arrest warrant can be avoided by mailing a certain amount of money to a certain address. The callers also say the case is subject to a gag order, and cannot be discussed with anyone. The names of actual Sheriff’s Department staff are being used in the scheme. Scam artists are, by nature, very convincing. However, this is not the way any legitimate law enforcement agency operates.
