RPD: Woman Suffer Major Injuries After Trying To Outrun Train In Downtown Redding

A driver was injured when her car was struck by a train in Downtown Redding Tuesday night. At around 8:20PM, the 50-year-old woman was westbound on South Street and stopped behind other traffic as the crossing arm began to come down for the approaching train. Witnesses say the woman then drove into the eastbound lanes and passed the other vehicles, drove around the crossing arm and onto the tracks. She did not outrun the locomotive. The engineer was unable to stop the southbound train in time and plowed into the Ford sedan, pushing it into the crossing signal. The woman was extricated and transported to Mercy Hospital with major injuries. All the downtown railroad crossings were closed for an extended time.
