RPD Warns Residents To Keep Distance From Bear Seen Wandering Through Downtown Area

Redding Police say they played hide and seek Thursday with a bear that may still be wandering around Downtown Redding. The Black Bear was seen Wednesday night up a Palm Tree after getting himself locked in a gated county parking lot in the area of Oregon Street and Tehama Street. The bear was shooed out of there but continued to amble around downtown. At one point it was seen running into the big construction area on California Street where the parking structure used to be. Redding Police have been in contact with State Fish and Wildlife biologists, who say the bear appears to be docile and is not posing a direct threat to anyone. People who happen to see it are encouraged to keep their distance and try not to corner it. Hopefully the bear will find its way back to the woods on its own.
