CHP: Driver Who Killed Pedestrian Thought He Struck A Deer

A Red Bluff driver killed a pedestrian, but says he didn’t know the awful truth until later. At 8:40PM Monday evening a 69-year-old man was walking north in the middle of the road on Lucknow Avenue just south of Dunvin Court. 51-year-old Randy Aspillaga came along in his 2012 Ford pickup and struck the man from behind, inflicting fatal injuries. He apparently thought he had hit a deer, but later when he got home he read on social media about a pedestrian being killed by a hit-and-run driver, and he realized the driver was him. Aspillaga called 9-1-1 and CHP Officers came to his home to interview him. The case is still under investigation. The CHP does not believe Aspillaga was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
