COVID-19 has killed 23 Shasta County residents in the past week. There were no new deaths reported over the weekend. Another 149 cases were reported, most of them younger than 40. There are 484 people known to be carrying the virus, 63 of them in the hospital and 14 in the ICU. Shasta County Public Health is encouraging people to get the flu shot along with the Covid vaccine. The vast majority of patients who die or get very ill from the virus are unvaccinated. A third dose is recommended for immunocompromised people. Public health and school officials say that until children can be vaccinated, masks are the most reasonable and effective way to protect them.
