Judge Denies Extension Of Deadline To Gather Recall Signatures

A Shasta County judge has denied an attempt to extend the deadline for signature gathering for the effort to recall 3 Shasta County Supervisors. Judge Tamara L. Wood denied the last minute attempt to extend the deadline by 32 days to gather signatures after attorneys for Recall Shasta and the Shasta General Purpose Committee, and County Clerk and Registrar of Voters Cathy Darling Allen, laid out their arguments on Tuesday. The groups supporting the recall effort wanted to extend the deadline to gather more signatures because they said that wildfire smoke had a significant effect on the signature gatherers. After hearing arguments the judge denied the extension, and said the recall organizers did not provide enough evidence to show that smoke from wildfires this past summer prevented them from collecting the required number of signatures. The judge reaffirmed Wednesday’s deadline. Shasta General Purpose Committee and three county residents filed the lawsuit two weeks ago.
