Two Men Killed Within A Week After Jumping Off Bridge Over Lake Siskiyou

Siskiyou County officials are warning the public against jumping from a certain bridge after two fatalities within two weeks. The Wagon Creek Bridge over Lake Siskiyou is posted with signs prohibiting climbing on or jumping from the span. On the evening of August 20th Aurdie Murphy, a 21-year-old man from North Carolina, jumped in and did not resurface. His body was found about 43 feet deep the next day. Last Friday night, which was one week later almost to the minute, 29-year-old James Vanaltena of Weed made the jump. His body was recovered Saturday. In both cases, other swimmers tried to rescue the men but were unable to get to them. Low water levels have greatly increased the distance from the bridge to the surface of the water.
