Alleged Attempted Kidnapper Faces Long Possible Sentence

A convicted sex offender was arraigned Monday on charges including attempted kidnapping. Friday night 59-year-old Donald Platner of Shingletown allegedly drove up to a girl in a parking lot near Old Alturas and Churn Creek Road and demanded she get in his van. She fled to a group of her friends nearby. Platner then reportedly tried to contact her again by driving to where the group was, and they confronted him. Witnesses say he then got out of his van and challenged the juveniles to a fight. Some bystanders got involved and Platner left. He was later arrested by Redding Police and found to be a convicted sex offender who had failed to register, and has three prior strike convictions. He’s being held on $1,000,000 bail and if convicted he could face up to 25-years-to-life in state prison.
