Shasta County has experienced a dramatic drop in COVID-19 cases. There were 2,199 new confirmed cases in January and just 674 in February. Public health officials urge people to allow this downward trend to continue by wearing a mask in public, stay home when sick, get tested and get immunized when the time comes.
Shasta County’s coronavirus death toll remains at 179. There are 32 new cases and 737 negative tests. The total number of cases so far is 11,086. An estimated 124 people have the virus right now, 16 of them hospitalized and 6 in intensive care.
Tehama County has reported 5,118 cases and 52 deaths.
There have been 373 cases and 5 deaths in Trinity County.
1,786 have been reported in Siskiyou County with 14 deaths.
Butte County has reported 167 deaths among their 10,824 cases.
Lassen County has had 22 deaths among their 2,028 cases in the community and 2 deaths among the 3,595 cases in prison.
Humboldt County has had 3,246 cases and 33 deaths.
Modoc County has had 460 cases and 4 deaths.
California will begin setting aside 40% of all vaccine doses for the state’s most vulnerable neighborhoods in an effort to inoculate people most at risk from the coronavirus more quickly. The doses will be spread among 400 ZIP codes where there are about 8 million people eligible for shots.
Indoor sports in California can soon resume after the state agreed to settle a lawsuit brought by two high-school athletes. The settlement means indoor youth sports can return in counties with a daily case rate of 14 or lower per 100,000. Shasta County’s rate is 10.
Vaccination clinics are scheduled this week for those who need a second dose of either the Moderna or the Pfizer vaccine. Details are at shastaready.org.

Public health says it’s very important that people continue to get tested regularly, but testing volume is way down in recent weeks. Walk-in testing is available at many locations listed under “Get Tested” at shastaready.org.
