Names have been made public of the three Redding Police Officers who shot a woman on the Cypress Avenue Bridge last month. At 11:25AM on February 8th, the RPD was told that a man on the bridge was waving a gun around. When officers got there, 27-year-old Brooke Leann Blair and two men were on the curb on the eastbound side. At first the three people were cooperative, but then Blair reportedly pulled a handgun from her waistband and raised it up. Three officers opened fire on Blair and she died after arriving at the hospital. The gun turned out to be a replica that looked real. the two men were not armed. The officers were Jeremiah Kasinger, Nate Sweeney and Brett Leonard. This was the third officer involved shooting within 2 years for Leonard. In April of 2019 a 48-year-old Navy veteran named Donnell Lang was walking near the Lema Ranch off Shasta View Drive when a 9-1-1 caller watching him through binoculars said he thought he saw the outline of a gun beneath Lang’s waistband. Leonard and another officer confronted him and the other officer got him in a hold on the ground, but when Lang started to roll over, he was shot in the chest by Leonard. Lang was not armed and his family filed a wrongful death lawsuit. The other fatal shooting Leonard was a part of was in August of 2018. 34-year-old Eric Jay Hames was shot by four officers next to the Domino’s Pizza on East Cypress after he had been threatening people with a knife and jumping on cars in busy traffic. Leonard was cleared of wrongdoing by the D.A.’s Office in both prior shootings. Last month’s incident is still under review.
