Redding City Council Approves Funding For New NPU

The Redding City Council has approved a second neighborhood police unit. This one will focus on the downtown core and trails. With a lot of growth downtown, including a new courthouse, and residential units, Police Chief Bill Schueller says the new NPU will be able to focus on community policing by working on foot and bicycle instead of being beholden to the radio, going from call to call. The council approved $200,000 for the hire of four officers. If officer recruitment is not immediately possible, personnel will be shuffled from other areas to establish the unit right away. The estimated cost for the program will be about $600,000 annually and will be taken up during discussion of the next budget cycle. The unit will be working from a substation already established in the Foundry Square.
