Redding may be getting another Neighborhood Police Unit, this time dedicated to the westside. The Redding City Council will vote on a budget resolution Tuesday that would appropriate $200,000 to add four officers and establish the city’s second proactive task force. Like the first NPU, the unit would not be going on routine patrol calls, but would concentrate their efforts on specific targeted issues, such as drugs or theft or anything else that needs special law enforcement attention. The first NPU was established to concentrate on the Hilltop/Dana retail and hotel district. The new unit would be assigned to trails, parks and the downtown area, where they would have a substation that’s already set up at Foundry Square. The ongoing cost for the four officers would be $600,000 annually. Even if the council approves the unit, it’s uncertain when it could be established because officer recruitment has been a challenge.
