Suspect Accused Of Murder Remains Jailed In Trinity County

There are some questions surrounding a murder in Hayfork on December 11th, according to the Trinity Journal. A Trinity County Sheriff’s Detective said deputies had been to the location several times in the prior week because of a property dispute between Ric Ortiz and Joseph Nieves. Ortiz was told to leave because he couldn’t prove residency. On the 11th the deputy came back to be shown mail and other documents backing the claim by Ortiz. The deputy apparently told the men it was a civil issue they needed to work out themselves before letting Ortiz into the gate and driving away. He was sent back later to find Ortiz had been shot and killed. Nieves is in Trinity County Jail on $1.5 Million bail.
