CHP: Woman Killed In Pile Up Caused Flatbed Hauling Hay Bales

A woman was killed in a 5 vehicle pile up in the Ingot area on Highway 299 east of Redding Tuesday morning. At 10:45AM a westbound tractor-trailer driven by Benjamin Zuniga-Garcia of Winton was hauling large 1200 pound hay bales on a flatbed. As the truck rounded a right curve, the load shifted and 6 of the bales spilled onto the roadway. Some of the bales landed on top of a 2001 Honda Civic driven by an unknown woman coming the other direction. The Civic spun into the westbound lane and was broadsided by a Honda Odyssey driven by 78-year-old Jeanie Fritch-McClung of Burney. An eastbound Subaru driven by 24-year-old Christian Davalos of Redding and a Dodge 2500 pickup driven by 37-year-old Travis Chandler Redding both collided with the remaining hay bales in the eastbound lane. The woman in the Civic, whose identity is unknown, died at the scene. All the other injuries were minor.
