Spike In Cases Will Push Shasta County In Most Restrictive Category

Another 17 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Shasta County, bringing the total to 1,640 with 28 deaths. Nearly 400 cases have been confirmed in the past seven days. More than 80% of people infected since September 1st have had symptoms, showing the importance of staying home when sick. There are 144 active cases with 7 of them hospitalized and one in intensive care. 376 people are quarantined due to possible exposure.

Butte County has reported 50 deaths among their 2,958 confirmed cases. Tehama County has had 726 cases and 8 deaths. 21 cases have been confirmed in Trinity County. Glenn County has had 638 cases and 3 deaths.Lassen County has had one death among 115 cases in the community and 637 in prison. There have been 183 in Siskiyou County with one death and 533 in Humboldt County with 8 deaths. Modoc County has reported 27 cases.

Shasta County is leading the state with its rapidly growing infection rate. The surge in cases since the start of September has been startling. While much of California is enjoying eased restrictions, Shasta County will enter the most restrictive purple tier in the middle of next week and by next Friday many businesses will be forced to close. Shasta County Public Health has said much of the surge among the older population has been a result of outbreaks in nursing homes, particularly Windsor Redding Care Center on Court Street. The most significant surge recently among younger people is attributed to Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry, with several hundred confirmed cases among the student body. Bethel school administrators now say masks and testing are required for everyone, despite statements among some church leaders to the contrary. The Bethel connection has attracted national media attention.
