Rain on the August Lightning Complex was by no means a season ending event as hoped, but it helped slow down the largest fire in California History. Now it’s all expected to quickly dry out again. The complex covers 1,028,600 acres. Overall containment is at 75% along hundreds of miles of control line. The fire is burning in six counties, including the far southwestern corner of Shasta County. Structure protection work continues as crews try to hold the fire south of Highway 36. In the northwest zone crews have completed lines from Van Duzen Road to Mad River Road at Ruth Lake. Burnout operations will continue strengthen control lines. Damage assessment crews in Southern Trinity County have confirmed 552 structures lost, 228 of them homes. That number will increase, as many areas are still not accessible.
