Man Convicted Of 2nd Degree Murder For 2016 DUI Crash

A 37-year-old man who was driving drunk when he crashed and caused the death of his passenger in Jones Valley four years ago has finally been found guilty by a Shasta County jury. On the night of April 26th, 2016, Danny Franklin of Lakewood was driving a Ford F250 pickup truck northbound on Dry Creek Road between Argonaut Road and Bear Mountain Road when he lost control and the pickup hit a parked truck on the side of the road and overturned. The passenger, 23-year-old Layton Ward Cesario of Redding, was partially ejected and the truck crushed him. Franklin, who had minor complaints of pain, had a blood alcohol level between .19% and .21%. Tuesday Franklin was convicted of second degree murder, felony DUI causing injury with a prior conviction, and enhancements. He’ll be sentenced on September 11th.
